On the outskirts of town, an unassuming faded cobalt-blue Taurus wended its way towards the headquarters of the DMIC chapter #257. Its driver, a tall, wizened individual, with stately glasses, and receding brown hair that surrounded a squarish face, had delegated driving to his hands and not his mind. His eyes had a faraway expression within, and his brow was furrowed in deep thought.

Brian was almost late to second period English II, walking in two seconds before the bell went off. However, because he wasn’t in his seat by the bell, the class got to razz him with unfavorable adjectives and phrases that described someone who was late. It didn’t bother him, but all the same, he would have rather been on time than not. Brian took his seat, a chair diagonally away from Lauren, as everyone got their books and paper out and Mrs. Lissenger cleared the board.

He glanced over at Lauren, who looked the same as she always did — racing T-shirt, jeans, and dirty-blonde hair stuffed into a baseball cap. He shook his head and tried to make what he had seen in the hall match. As the teacher covered the ins and outs of pronouns, he reviewed what he knew.

She didn’t usually go down that hall, so it could have been somebody else. Somebody else, though, would have had to share her taste in clothing and her devotion to MOPAR, which made it unlikely. It could be somebody dressed up as her, for some kind of theatre stunt, maybe? No, he didn’t see anyone with a videocamera around, or even a camera. Besides that, it looked completely unplanned. He sighed and turned his attention to the blackboard. Maybe Lauren did have a girly side after all. He sure hoped that she wouldn’t stop talking about cars and doing crazy dares, but he would find out for sure after class.
