“Now, to make sure that You don’t forget, there will be a quiz tomorrow.” The class groaned, and she tilted her head, feigning hurt. “Now, now, this will be easy for You and will help bring up Your grades. Class dismissed!”

The class grumbled their way out the door, and Brian joined Lauren.

“Hey,” he said.

“Hey. So you’re going my way today?”

“Yeah. I wanted to ask you about something.” He chose his words carefully. Lauren could get really prickly when the subject was sensitive.

“Yeah, what is it?”

“I saw you in K Hall the other day.”

Lauren felt her mouth go dry. “Yeah, I cut through there to mek class sometimes.” It wasn’t a lie; she had done it twice. She knew where this was going, but she didn’t let it show.

“No, I mean in the morning.”

“So?”

It was her, no doubt about it; she was getting prickly.

“I just wanted to make sure that you were still you. You’re not turning into a frou-frou girly-girl are you?”

She laughed. “No way, man.” Then she exhaled and he could feel the tension dissipate. “My stupid cousin is getting hitched and I need to figure out what to wear!”

Brian smiled and wiped his forehead with an exaggerated expression of relief. “Whew.”
