“No, I mean, yes.” She sighed. “It’s bittersweet. It’s like there are two different waves and they wash over me at different times. I’m really never sure what I’ll be feeling.”
He nodded. “I just think you’re brave,” he said. “I don’t know if I could carry on like you have.”
She looked at him, feeling a faint pang. He looked so sincere when he said that and almost cute.
“Hey now, I’m sure you could do it. You have the mental muscles, remember?” She put her thumbs on her head and lifted her index fingers above them.
“That’s right. But I’d still need someone to tell all my plans to!”
“It’s a good thing I’m here for you then, isn’t it?”
He grinned like an idiot. “Seriously, though, you’ll let me know if you’re not ok, won’t you?”
“I promise,” she said.
“I’m only one VRC away.”
“I know,” she said, smiling.
Just then she heard three mid-pitched bells, calm and soothing, come fom behind Jeffrey’s back. “Oops! Gotta go!”
“See you later,” she said, waving to him.
“See you!” He waved back and then shimmered out of existence. She knew what those bells meant and it didn’t bother her; it meant that his parents wanted him to do something. She was surprised that time had gone by so quickly, but in a way was secretly glad. She could feel the tides of sorrow start to pool at her feet.
To hold it off, she turned her thoughts to something pleasing. Was it only three days away? It seemed so amazing that he would be here so soon. She squeezed past the VR unit and sat down by Lloyd, idly petting him as he slept. Every month, the League dispatched a resupply ship to visit all the colonies in the local area; it visited the outer planetoids first, starting with Merlianne and then reaching hers almost last; only Diane’s colony was left after hers. It brought supplies, books, comic books, drop-comms (monthly individual conversations), letters, music, seasonal seeds, school, news, and best of all, people.
She thought back to what he — Daniel — had told her the first time that they met. She wasn’t as bad off now, but back then, she felt like the world was falling on her. He had told her about the history of the resupplying missions. “And that’s why I’m here, visiting you,” he had said. She smiled to herself, her fingers stroking Lloyd’s sleeping form.
