Diane nodded, understandingly.
Neither of them spoke for a moment. Then Sarah asked, “How’s the plan going?”
A broad smile lit up her face, revealing that she had set her trap. Sarah was glad that she wasn’t the one having to match wits with her. “I’m preparing my butter-rum cookies and black tea.”
“He doesn’t stand a chance, does he?”
“Not one,” Diane replied with a twinkle in her eye.
Still, what would come of it would be anybody’s guess. Daniel had no orders to transmit messages from the colonists back home, so in this, they had to rely upon his good nature. All seven colonies in the main arc all had agreed to let Diane convey the message — that they wanted to sign the petition, or if they were not allowed, to concur with it, as a “friend of the court” or sign a separate “sense of agreement” motion. They had reasoned that if each of them had asked him, he would less agreeable. Besides that, Diane had been a lawyer on Earth some time ago and had the best legal mind (and the best cookies) among them.
Her husband, Harry, poked his head in. “I’ve been begging her for one for DAYS and she still won’t give in. You wouldn’t believe the aroma!”
Even though she had eaten dinner, Sarah couldn’t help but feel a little hungry. “I’d like a few, myself. Why can’t we trade, again, anyways?”
Diane thought for a moment. “I think there’s something about it in rule nine– the mission and the purpose of resupply ships. Ah yes. Because the resupply ships must deliver goods to all colonies, they cannot favor any colony over any other. They must keep to their appointed routes unless a disaster dictates otherwise.”
Sarah said, “I feel so selfish when you describe the reasons behind it!”
Diane laughed good-naturedly and said, “You’ve got a good heart, Sarah.”
“It’s too bad that’s not enough.”
“Don’t worry. If anyone can find a way, you can. You’re an overcomer, you know.”
Sarah felt a little tickle in the back of her throat warn her that she might not be able to hold back tears if Diane continued. “I wouldn’t have made it without all my friends, especially you,” she said.
Diane smiled in return. “Well, I don’t want to take up too much of your time, especially if you haven’t talked to Jeffrey already.”
Sarah put on her best primadonna impression. “I don’t have to worry about him. He called earlier and we agreed that he wouldn’t talk to any other girls.”
