“Sarah of Adenia?”
“Yes, I’m here,” she said. She felt so excitedly coiled inside and she hoped that her voice didn’t sound too girly. If she sounded like Ariella in Star Knights, she’d just die.
“Great! Sorry about the connection. I think it must be the solar radiation.” He laughed, and she joined in. “We’ll be there in an hour. Mack’s still with us.”
“Hi Princess!” Mack’s easy-going gravelly accent, was like the sound of the back streets and mechanics from every planet. She had known him almost as long as Daniel.
“Hi Mack!”
Daniel took back the mic. “We’ve got our new member, Greg, working on the comms. I’ll introduce you two when we land.”
“Ok.” Merlianne — and everyone else after her — had warned her about Greg.
“We’ll land in the usual location. Can you make it out to us?”
“I’ll be there with bells on!”
Daniel laughed. “Great, we’re all looking forward to seeing you. Be there soon. Goodbye.”
She replied, “Farewell,” in a silly, over-the-top style, and then the transmission was over. She frowned. Was that too girly?

It had been Daniel, Mack, and Jeremy ever since the founding, up until three months ago. Then the following visit, Jeremy was no longer a part of the crew. Daniel and Mack hadn’t volunteered any answers, and no-one could convince them to share what they did know. She knew that the League favored long-term stability in the colonies, and even in the crews on the maintenance and scavenger ships. Changing crew members, unless due to death or disability, was almost unheard of. The fact that they didn’t have an immediate replacement meant that they weren’t expecting it, she thought. She shook her head. All of the colonists in her arc had gone round and round with theories and never came up with a satisfactory explanation.

It had been equally as shocking that the maintenance ship had three members once again. Merlianne called her as soon as her visit was over to warn everyone else. The reason? The new third member, Gregory Jones, was a triple-strength jerk. Sarah remembered with a feeling of half-admiration and half-shock how she had rattled off the adjectives like a machine-gun: “He’s insensitive, insincere, rude, selfish, elitist, smelly, arrogant, boring, and totally frim!” Sarah laughed at the memory. Merlianne thought he was arrogant? Could there exist someone more arrogant than her? At any rate, it was clear that Greg didn’t care for colonists, his job, or people in general.
